Terms of use

Effective September 21, 2026

These terms describe use of Alexandria and this website, maintained by Arnaud Ferreri. Please also read the privacy policy.

1. The software and its licenses

Alexandria is an open-source retro game library and player. Its source code is made available under the GNU General Public License, version 3, as described in the repository. Bundled emulator cores, libraries, artwork, and other components may have their own licenses and notices.

These terms do not replace, restrict, or take away rights granted by applicable open-source licenses. If these terms conflict with a component’s license concerning that component, its license controls.

2. Game files and lawful use

You are responsible for ensuring that you have the necessary rights to download, copy, use, and play games, ROMs, BIOS files, artwork, and other content. A file being listed in an archive or accessible online does not establish permission to use it.

Alexandria is a client and player; the project does not host the third-party game files it links to. The software does not grant a license to any game or other third-party content. Respect copyright, applicable law, and the terms of content providers.

3. Optional accounts and connected services

Features such as cloud sync, archive access, and achievements depend on services you choose to connect. Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud, Internet Archive, RetroAchievements, and other providers have their own terms, policies, limits, and availability.

You are responsible for your accounts and devices and for the permissions you grant. Use only accounts you are authorized to access. You can disable sync, disconnect a provider, or revoke access using the provider’s controls. Disconnecting does not automatically delete cloud copies; the privacy policy explains the distinction.

4. Saves, compatibility, and backups

Game compatibility, emulator features, save formats, and synchronization support vary by platform, core, game, and version. A save state created by one emulator or version may not work with another. Online services can change or become unavailable.

Keep independent backups of saves and other files you cannot replace. Review conflict choices before overwriting data. Alexandria does not guarantee uninterrupted operation, successful restoration, or freedom from data loss.

5. Responsible use

Do not use Alexandria or this website to infringe others’ rights, access accounts without permission, distribute malware, or interfere with services. These conditions do not prohibit modification, study, or redistribution permitted by the software’s licenses.

6. No warranty; limits of liability

To the extent permitted by applicable law and the relevant software licenses, Alexandria and this website are provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.

To the extent permitted by applicable law, the maintainer and contributors are not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from use of the software or website, including loss of data or inability to use a connected service. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot legally be excluded or limits mandatory consumer rights. The warranty and liability provisions in applicable open-source licenses remain in effect.

7. Third-party names and links

Game titles, platform names, logos, and trademarks belong to their respective owners. Their appearance in Alexandria or on this website does not imply endorsement, sponsorship, or affiliation. External sites are operated by their respective providers.

8. Updates and contact

The software, website, and these terms may be updated. Revised terms will be published on this page with a new effective date and apply prospectively, subject to applicable law. Updates do not revoke rights already granted under open-source licenses.
